Department of Geography
The Department of Geography at GDC Memorial College is an interdisciplinary academic unit that bridges the domains of physical and social sciences, offering a comprehensive understanding of Earth systems and human-environment interactions. Established in 2011 with the inception of the college, the department initially offered undergraduate programmes. Recognizing the expanding scope and relevance of geography in addressing contemporary global challenges, postgraduate programmes (M.A./M.Sc. in Geography) were introduced in 2014.
Over the years, geography has evolved into a dynamic discipline incorporating advanced tools such as Geospatial Technologies, Remote Sensing, GIS, and Spatial Analytics. These advancements have significantly enhanced its application in environmental management, urban planning, disaster mitigation, and sustainable development. The department aims to equip students with both theoretical foundations and technical competencies to meet emerging academic and professional demands.
The department has actively contributed to academic excellence by organizing a Two-Day National Conference on “Geo-spatial Technology and Sustainable Development” (20–21 October 2018) and a One-Week Workshop-cum-Training Programme on Basics of Remote Sensing and GIS (29 January-4 February 2026). The academic strength of the department is reflected in student achievements, with several qualifying prestigious examinations such as UGC-NET/JRF.
